Often called the world's foremost bridge designer and engineer, Dr. Steinman and his associates designed more than 400 bridges on five continents. He regarded the Mackinac Bridge linking Michigan's two peninsulas as his "crowning achievement". Completed in 1957, the bridge across the Straits of Mackinac is the world's longest suspension bridge from anchorage to anchorage. It exemplifies Steinman's talent for combining beauty in design with engineering utility and durability. With a critical wind velocity of infinity, it represents an aerodynamic stability never before attained in suspension bridge design. Steinman and his firm also designed the International Bridge connecting the Sault Ste. Maries of Michigan and Ontario.
