As the longest serving member of the commission that sets policy for Michigan's transportation programs (1975-1992), Meyers helped guide the development of a balanced transportation system embracing all travel modes. After four years on the State highway Commission, he was named by Gov. William G. Milliken in 1979 as the first chairman of the newly-established State Transportation Commission with oversight of the Michigan Department of Transportation. He played a prominent role in transforming the State highway Department to an agency with wide-ranging responsibilities in public transit, railroads and aviation, as well as highways. His legal experience and even-handed approach to many complex issues provided a much needed balance during a long and difficult process.
