Beginning Monday, July 14, 2008, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will fully close a one-mile section of the I-96 freeway from Rosa Parks Boulevard to I-94 in southwest Detroit for 90 days. New alternate routes will be posted to assist motorists; Mexicantown, downtown and Southwest Detroit will continue to be accessible and open for business and events. Ramps affected by the I-96 closure:
- Warren to EB I-96 - OPEN (but forced off at MLK to all routes)
- WB I-96 to Warren - CLOSED
- EB I-96 to M-10/NB I-75 - CLOSED
- EB I-96 to SB I-75 - CLOSED
- SB I-75 to WB I-96 - CLOSED
- NB M-10 to WB I-96 - CLOSED
- Rosa Parks to WB I-96/SBI-75 - CLOSED (traffic will be directed along the service drive to the Warren on-ramp)
- EB I-96 to MLK and Michigan Ave - CLOSED (from I-96 but open for I-94 ramps with posted detours)
- MLK to WB I-96 - CLOSED
- EB I-96 to Warren - OPEN
- Warren to WB I-96 - OPEN
- EB I-96 to Vernor Hwy - OPEN
- NB M-10 to WB I-94 - OPEN (during the 90 days only)
For the I-94 exits to EB I-96, traffic seeking to access Mexicantown or Canada will be directed onto mainline and a left exit temporary slip ramp to access the exit to Vernor Hwy. Traffic will be notified that the EB I-96 ramp will be open to Downtown. Note: the service drive is not continuous from Warren Ave to MLK.
