Farm Lane safety improvement project begins on Michigan State University campus

Contact:  Kari Arend, MDOT Office of Communications, 517-750-0406
Agency: Transportation

October 29, 2007 - - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will oversee a major two-year construction project along Farm Lane on the campus of Michigan State University (MSU). The project will lower Farm Lane under two existing railroad crossings. In addition, Farm Lane will be widened from two lanes to five, between Mt. Hope Road and Wilson Road, along with the addition of new sidewalks and bike paths.

To minimize the disruption to motorists, commuters, and students, the project will be built in phases over the next two years. Phase 1, which begins this fall, will have minimal traffic impacts on Farm Lane and Service Drive.

Phase 2 is expected to begin in March of 2008. This phase involves closing Farm Lane to pedestrians and vehicles between Mt. Hope Road and, eventually, Wilson Road on MSU's campus. A portion of Service Road also will be closed. A local detour will be posted.

In addition to increasing safety and mobility for motorists and pedestrians, the project also will include: drainage improvements including building new pump houses and detention basins, landscaping, the reconfiguration of the commuter lot (Lot 89), and construction of two new service drives to be located just west of Farm Lane.

The project is a joint partnership between MDOT and MSU. MDOT and MSU officials also are working closely with the Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA) to minimize disruption to CATA bus service, particularly on Route 32 which serves the commuter lot and Spartan Village on Harrison Road. The commuter lot on the corner of Mt. Hope Road and Farm Lane will remain open during construction, with pedestrian, vehicular and bus traffic rerouted.
