Project 2: Oakland County

Start: April 2009       End: November 2009

What we are doing: 

  • A $13 million road and bridge rehabilitation project on I-696 in Oakland County.
  • The project limits are between Halsted and Campbell-Hilton roads.
  • The project is designed to improve the pavement condition on the I-696 corridor and rehabilitate 42 bridges.
  • The pavement rehabilitation portion of this project will be conducted between Halsted and Scotia roads just to the east of Woodward Avenue. All pavement patching will be completed in conjunction with bridge rehabilitation to minimize the impact on traffic.
  • The bridge rehabilitation includes substructure and deck repairs. Included in this project is repair to 42 bridges:
    Eastbound I-696 over Rouge River;
    Westbound I-696 over Rouge River;
    Northbound US-24 to eastbound I-696 over eastbound M-10;
    Lahser Road over I-696;
    11 Mile Road over I-696;
    Eastbound 11 Mile Service Drive over I-696;
    Evergreen Road over I-696;
    Santa Barbara Drive over I-696;
    Westbound Southfield Road U-turn over I-696;
    Southfield Road over I-696;
    Eastbound Southfield Road U-turn over I-696;
    Lincoln Drive over I-696;
    Westbound Greenfield Road U-turn over I-696;
    Greenfield Road over I-696;
    Eastbound Greenfield Road U-turn over I-696;
    West 10 Mile Road Service Drive over I-696;
    Eastbound Coolidge Road U-turn over I-696;
    Coolidge Road over I-696;
    Westbound Coolidge Road U-turn over I-696;
    Scotia Road over I-696;
    Harvard Road over I-696;
    Mohawk Avenue over I-696;
    Campbell Avenue over I-696;
    Corporate Drive over I-696;
    Central Park Boulevard over I-696;
    Eastbound Meadowlark U-turn over I-696;
    Red River Drive U-turn over I-696;
    Santa Barbara Drive U-turn over I-696;
    Lathrup Road over I-696;
    Manistee Street U-turn over I-696;
    Roanoke Avenue U-turn over I-696;
    Maplefield Road U-turn over I-696;
    Washington Avenue over Woodward Avenue;
    Westbound I-696 over Woodward Avenue;
    Eastbound I-696 over Woodward Avenue;
    Westbound Woodward U-turn over I-696;
    Southbound Woodward Service Drive over I-696;
    Eastbound I-696 over Drake Road;
    Westbound I-696 over Drake Road;
    Eastbound I-696 over Inkster Road;
    Westbound I-696 over Inkster Road; and
    GTW Railroad over I-696.

How traffic is affected: 

  • A minimum of three lanes of traffic will be open in each direction on I-696 via traffic shifts, with the exception of a three-week period when east- and westbound I-696 will be reduced to two lanes in each direction over the Rouge River and over Drake Road for bridge deck replacement.
  • During off-peak hours (9 p.m. to 5 a.m.) and at all times on weekends, I-696 may be reduced to two lanes in each direction.
  • Traffic on local bridges will be maintained with a single lane in each direction where possible. Other structures will be closed and detoured to the next available overpass.
