WHEN: Tuesday, Sept. 26
3:30 to 7:30 p.m.

BACKGROUND: The Blue Water Bridge is the second busiest U.S./Canadian border crossing for commercial traffic and the fourth busiest overall for total traffic between the two countries. MDOT proposes to expand the Blue Water Bridge Plaza in an effort to accommodate existing and future traffic. The study began in 2002 and has been upgraded from an Environmental Assessment to an Environmental Impact Statement. The estimated completion date for this study is August 2008.

Recently the current study has been separated into two studies. An Environmental Impact Statement will continue to be completed to address plaza expansion and to determine a proposed layout.

A separate Environmental Assessment will be completed to address I-69/I-94 roadway improvements including the Black River crossing, the Water Street interchange and the new Welcome Center. Improvements proposed in the EA will be necessary regardless of what alternative is selected for plaza improvements. A public meeting concerning the corridor improvements will take place later this fall.

This meeting is an open forum style format to encourage the public to stop in, meet with officials, and view and comment on the three practical alternatives (two existing practical alternatives and one new practical alternative) still under consideration for potential plaza improvements. Two of the practical alternatives propose expanding the plaza at its existing location in Port Huron; and the third alternative relocates the plaza facilities to Port Huron Township. A no-build alternative also is under consideration.

The public can view exhibits, which include the study area, purpose and need, study processes, environment issues and alternatives. Comment forms will be available for participants to provide feedback on the alternatives, identify concerns and offer suggestions.
