BACKGROUND: To keep needed freeway improvements moving forward quickly, MDOT is preparing a separate Environmental Assessment on the I-94/I-69 corridor in Port Huron.

This public meeting will address the proposed improvements to the Black River Bridge, Water Street interchange, and a new Welcome Center. These improvements are required regardless of the outcome of the plaza's separate Environmental Impact Statement.

The meeting is an open-forum style format to encourage the public to stop in, meet with the study team, view displays, and comment on the proposed improvements. Specific items to be discussed include the Environmental Assessment's purpose and need, study process, environmental issues and alternatives.

Some needs for improving the I-94/I-69 corridor will occur before any plaza changes. Some key issues include: traffic growth; traffic backups; traffic conflicts and crash history; and the current condition of existing roadways within the corridor and the Black River Bridge. While these issues had been part of the previous combined plaza and corridor environmental clearance process, MDOT hopes that separating the focus area will expedite the corridor improvements while analysis continues on the plaza alternatives. The focus of the meeting is to answer questions, address concerns, and gather ideas on the proposed improvements selected for the Environmental Assessment.
