MDOT and Federal Highway Administration agree to extend public comment period for Blue Water Bridge study

Agency: Transportation

October 18, 2007 - - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) have agreed to extend the public comment period by 30 days for the Draft Environmental Impact Study (DEIS) for the Blue Water Bridge project in Port Huron. The new date is Monday, Dec. 10.

The extension was requested by the city, county and townships due to the volume and complexity of the DEIS materials, and to assure adequate time for community input.

"We believe an additional 30 days of review will be beneficial to assure everyone has a chance to provide input to the DEIS," said Matt Webb, Blue Water Bridge project manager, MDOT. "Both MDOT and the FHWA appreciate the community's concerns about the impacts of this project and we, too, want everyone to have an opportunity to understand the document. At the same time, there are many people who have asked our agencies to expedite the study phase."

The DEIS is available for review online and at the following locations:

St. Clair County Library, 210 McMorran Blvd., Port Huron
St. Clair County Planning, 200 Grand River Ave., Suite 203, Port Huron
City of Port Huron, Office of the City Clerk, 100 McMorran Blvd., Port Huron
Fort Gratiot Township, 3720 Keewahdin Road, Fort Gratiot
Port Huron Township, 3800 Lapeer Road, Port Huron
MDOT Metro Region Office, 18101 W. Nine Mile Road, Southfield
MDOT Port Huron Transportation Service Center, 2127 11th Ave., Port Huron
MDOT Bureau of Transportation Planning, 425 W. Ottawa St., Lansing

To help the public stay involved and knowledgeable during the study phase, MDOT designed its public involvement process with many opportunities for feedback. Since 2002, there have been six public information meetings, three community involvement workshops, more than 45 meetings with local stakeholders, and a public hearing held Oct. 9.

The proposed project would expand the Blue Water Bridge Plaza and improve the I-94/I-69 corridor.
