Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) held our First Biennial Research Summit on October 1, 2008. This Research Summit provided an opportunity for university researchers, MDOT staff, and transportation stakeholders in Michigan with an interest in research to meet and:
Learn about MDOT's strategic research focus areas
Listen to presentations about selected high-value research projects from ORBP staff and MDOT's research project managers. Copies of the presentations are linked to below.
Participate in small groups to discuss research needs and priorities as set forth by MDOT's executive team, brainstorm research gaps and opportunities, network with others with common research interests, and begin collaboration on the formation of research problem statements and project ideas for the 2010-2011 research biennium.
The breakout groups centered around five Strategic Themes, which were based on MDOT's long-term and short-term needs. The department's Research Executive Committee identified these needs in a recent meeting that included the director, COO, CAO, bureau directors and others.
The five Strategic Themes were:
A. Safety
B. Mobility
C. Organizational Effectiveness
D. Environmental Accountability
E. Renewal & Sustainability
For more details about these themes, click on the link below called Research Strategic Themes. This document lists the issues/needs identified by MDOT senior management within each theme, which influenced the project ideas developed at the Summit. Please note that these ideas are not listed in any particular order, except that long-term needs are shown at the end.
