Communication, Consciousness-Raising & Public Involvement
How do we raise public awareness about transportation issues and increase the public's input on the systems they use on a daily basis? The transportation community needs to be flexible enough to use the most effective communication methods available to reach their target audience. Furthermore, a statewide information source for public transportation needs to be developed and it must encompass all modes of transportation.
Planning Team Meetings
From June 2003 to November 2003, "planning teams" met to explore and consider nine key issues. Experts were invited to speak on these topics. The experts' and the planning teams' comments and insights have been documented and made available to the public through this site. Each planning team also drafted a list of actions to consider for each of the issues.
Summit Breakout Sessions
At the Summit breakout sessons that followed in Lansing during December 2003, over 500 people from Michigan, Canada and neighboring states came together to discuss and further refine the nine key issues. Beginning with the issues, goals and actions drafted by the planning teams in the months before, these breakout sessions processed, voted on, and compiled what was to be the solid starting point for implementing Michigan's 21st century transportation vision.
Action Team Meetings
As part of the ongoing Transportation Summit initiative, MDOT is seeking public input and participation on implementing the plan for 21st century transportation. Nine "action teams" will meet on a monthly basis during 2004 to turn put this plan into action.
