General Overview: The Director of the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is appointed by the Governor of Michigan. MDOT is reponsible for planning, building, and maintaining Michigan's transportation system, which includes:

• highways and bridges,
• public transit,
• rail freight and passenger systems,
• airports.

The mission of MDOT is to provide the highest quality transportation services for the economic benefit and improved quality of life for Michigan's citizens and visitors.
