- MDOT is holding a public hearing on April 25, 2013, on proposed changes to the NHRM routing designations for four routes in Detroit (Wayne County).
- The comment period has been extended to May 27, 2013, to give the public the opportunity to attend the meeting and submit their comments.
February 28, 2013 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is holding a public hearing on proposed changes to the existing non-radioactive hazardous materials (NHRM) routing designations for four routes located in Wayne County. The hearing is scheduled for Thursday, April 25, at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Hall at 1358 Abbott Street in Detroit from 4 to 8 p.m. There will be a formal presentation by MDOT at 4:30 p.m. that will be repeated at 6 p.m.
The four existing routes evaluated by MDOT are:
- Ambassador Bridge (Detroit) from Porter Street to Canada (Windsor)
- Windsor Tunnel (Detroit) from Jefferson Avenue to Canada (Windsor)
- M-10 (Lodge Freeway) from Howard Street to Woodward Avenue, approximately 1 mile under Cobo Hall
- M-10 (Lodge Freeway) from 8 Mile Road (South) to Wyoming Road
MDOT is the authorized agency responsible for all NHRM routing designations, restrictions and requirements in the state of Michigan. MDOT says the extended comment period and hearing will allow additional opportunities for the public to review and comment on the proposed changes.
"The report focuses on four existing routes that already have specific restrictions for transporting non-radioactive hazardous materials," said Tony Kratofil, MDOT Metro Region Engineer. "It does not contain recommendations for any other routes. As always, safety continues to be a primary concern."

The public is encouraged to submit comments to MDOT, summarizing a specific substantive and factual basis for support or opposition. For consideration in the final determination, comments must be received on or before May 27, 2013. The first public announcement of the proposed changes was issued on Dec. 20, 2012. MDOT has 18 months from that initial public announcement to issue a final decision.
