- Along with speed enforcement, this reduced speed limit and hospital zone sign installation is expected to increase safety for drivers entering or exiting the hospital and increase awareness for other drivers passing through this area.
May 16, 2017 -- The speed limit on US-31 in the vicinity of Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital will be lowered to 45 mph next week, under the provisions of a new state law.
New hospital zone and 45 mph speed limit signs will be installed to the east and west of the hospital on Monday. This zone and reduced speed limit from the current 55 mph was requested by Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital, which is located just north of Manistee between the M-55 and M-22 intersections.
Public Act 445 of 2016 requires: "The state transportation department, a county road commission, or a local authority shall decrease the speed limit in a hospital highway zone by up to 10 miles per hour upon request of a hospital located within that hospital highway zone."
The current 55 mph speed limit will remain in effect until new 45 mph speed limit signs are installed. The hospital, as provided for in the new law, paid installation and material costs for the new signs.
