About Freight Services & Safety

Part of the Michigan Department of Transportation's Office of Rail, Freight Services and Safety works to ensure that Michigan's rail system meets the economic needs of the state and is safe for the motoring public and railroad employees.

Within this area, there are regulatory and program functions. Regulatory efforts include monitoring the physical conditions of railroad crossings and facilitating reviews to determine if safety enhancements at crossings would be appropriate. Program functions include providing funding for safety enhancements at railroad crossings, as well as rail infrastructure improvement and rail freight-related economic development loans. Service on a portion of the system is directly preserved through the management of 530-miles of state-owned rail lines.
