What is the law on where the location of speed limit signs should be posted on each roadway?

Michigan Vehicle Code
sets the maximum speed limits for different types of roads and vehicles (Sections 257.627, 257.628).

The vehicle code also requires the Michigan Department of Transportation and the Michigan State Police to develop a manual, known as the Michigan Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MMUTCD). The manual provides guidelines for the design and placement of speed limit signs.

Section 2B-12 of the manual states:

Speed limit signs should be located at the points of change from one speed limit to another or as near there to as possible.

At the end of the section to which a speed limit appliers, a speed limit sign showing the next speed limit shall be erected. Additional signs shall be installed beyond major intersections and other locations where it is necessary to remind motorists of the limit that is applicable.

In rural districts on the interstate system, U.S., and other state numbered routes, speed limit signs indicating the statutory speed limits shall be erected at entrances to the state and at boundaries of metropolitan areas.
