Escort policy suspended on International Bridge

Contact:  Dawn Garner 906-485-4270
Agency: Transportation

May 21, 2004 -- The Joint International Bridge Authority (JIBA) today voted to suspend the hazmat placarded vehicle escorts and fee policy originally implemented in January. Effective May 31, all escorts will be suspended except for overweight, overwidth, radioactive and explosive loads which will continue to be escorted free of charge.

The bridge administration recently was made aware that the escort policy may not have been implemented in full compliance with federal procedural requirements regarding trucking industry delays.

"We will work with the US-DOT, as well as JIBA legal advisors, to ensure that all procedural requirements are followed and that the escort policy is implemented with proper regard to minimizing commerce restrictions," said Phil Becker, International Bridge general manager. "Our top responsibility is the safety and security of our customers and the bridge," Becker said. "We will create a policy that will balance this priority with trucking industry concerns."
