Agency: Transportation

March 29, 2012 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has posted a new video for the public on its YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/michigandot. The video provides basic information on asset management principles MDOT uses to prioritize the transportation infrastructure maintenance and construction programs it is responsible for on a limited budget.

"Michigan residents can be assured that MDOT uses asset management to preserve and extend the service life of our valuable transportation assets, making the most of limited resources," said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle. Steudle, who currently is president of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), is nationally recognized for his expertise in asset management. He is speaking at the 9th National Conference on Transportation Asset Management next month in San Diego.

As it applies to transportation, asset management is a process of keeping track of all assets - like roads, bridges, railroad tracks or airports - and what condition they are in. MDOT uses that information to help decide what components should be maintained, expanded, or even have work delayed until more complete fixes can be made.
