Work begins to rebuild M-139 bridge over Dowagiac River in Niles

April 4, 2012 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has started rebuilding the M-139 bridge over the Dowagiac River in Niles, Berrien County. The $2.2 million project is expected to be completed by the end of October.

Throughout construction, the bridge will be open with one lane of alternating traffic through July. Starting Aug. 1, there will be one lane open in each direction. According to MDOT statistics, there was an average of 8,000 vehicles per day in 2010 crossing the M-139 bridge over the Dowagiac River. About 220 of those were commercial vehicles.
