Eighth annual asset management conference set for May 8 in East Lansing

April 18, 2013 -- The Michigan Transportation Asset Management Council will sponsor the eighth annual Michigan Transportation Asset Management Conference, Wednesday, May 8, at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center in East Lansing. The conference will once again provide a forum for state and local officials to examine the relationship between asset management, pavement management, and road funding.

With a theme of "Asset Management - A Clear Path to Measuring Performance," the conference will focus on practical examples of best practices at the national, state and local level, and will offer attendees practical guidance on how to measure the performance of organizations and transportation assets.

"Every state and local agency is faced with dwindling funds," said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle. "In this time of big needs and scarce resources, it is critical for agencies to measure their performance and manage their assets accordingly."

The Michigan Transportation Asset Management Council includes representatives from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), Michigan Municipal League (MML), Michigan Association of Counties (MAC), Michigan Townships Association (MTA), Michigan Association of Regions (MAR), Michigan Transportation Planning Association (MTPA), and the County Road Association of Michigan (CRAM).

Transportation asset management is a process of managing public assets, such as roads and bridges, based on the long-range condition of the entire transportation system. The Michigan Transportation Asset Management Council, created in 2002 by the Michigan Legislature, promotes the concept that the transportation system is unified, rather than separated by jurisdictional ownership. Its mission is to recommend an asset management strategy to the State Transportation Commission and the Michigan Legislature for all of Michigan's roads and bridges.
