M-64 speed limit to change in Ontonagon

Contact: James Lake, MDOT Office of Communications, 906-786-1830, ext. 321

Agency: Transportation

May 15, 2007 - - In response to a request from the village of Ontonagon, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is lowering the speed limit at the M-64/US-45 intersection, pending the findings from a formal speed study later this summer.

Previously, the speed limit for eastbound M-64 traffic crossing the new bridge was 45 mph through the US-45 intersection, where it was then reduced to 35 mph. MDOT has moved the 35 mph sign west of the intersection, reducing the speed limit prior to crossing US-45.

The speed limit for westbound traffic on M-38, signed for 35 mph, will not change. Speed limits on the M-64 bridge will remain 45 mph.

M-64 and M-38 end at their intersection with US-45.

When the speed study is completed this summer, MDOT and the Michigan State Police will prepare a formal Traffic Control Order to set speed in the area. Speed limits could change again, depending on the results of the speed study.
