Eight counties to invest in local roads with
Transportation Economic Development Fund grants

January 23, 2012 -- Eight Michigan counties will use $2,756,650 in state Category F funds to upgrade roads in urban areas to all-season status to support local economic growth and keep Michigan open for business year-round, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced today. The "all-season" classification is important to commercial shippers because seasonal weight restrictions on even the smallest section of commercial roadway can severely restrict shipping operations and limit a company's ability to compete and thrive.
"This funding will help improve all-season commercial routes that link current and future manufacturers to state roads," said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle. "MDOT is pleased to partner with cities and county road commissions to provide continuous, all-season access to commercial routes and keep goods moving across Michigan."
Projects have been approved for Transportation Economic Development Fund (TEDF) Category F funds in Chippewa, Delta, Ingham, Ionia, Muskegon, Otsego, Ottawa and Washtenaw counties. The projects will be completed with $1,809,974 in local matching funds. The improvements will include road reconstruction, resurfacing, widening and intersection improvements.
The TEDF provides funding for transportation improvements that enhance the state's ability to compete in a global economy, promote economic growth and improve the quality of life in Michigan. Eligible applicants for Category F grants are county, city and village road agencies within counties having a population of 400,000 or less. Funding is awarded on a competitive basis with a minimum local match of 20 percent.
Approved 2013 TEDF Category F Projects by County
Chippewa County (two projects)
The Chippewa County Road Commission will resurface and make drainage improvements to Riverside Drive from 3 Mile Road to 4 Mile Road. This all-season route connects Soo Township with the city of Sault Ste. Marie. The $405,313 project will receive $324,250 in state TEDF Category F funding.
The city of Sault Ste. Marie will resurface Spruce Street from 380 feet west of Pine Street to West Portage Avenue, upgrading an important east-west commercial route to all-season status. The $387,000 project will receive $309,600 in state TEDF Category F funding.
Delta County The city of Gladstone will resurface North 9th Street from North 5th Street to North Lakeshore Drive. This existing all-season route connects the commercial and industrial areas of Gladstone with US-2/US-41. The $85,800 project will receive $68,640 in state TEDF Category F funding.
Ingham County The Ingham County Road Commission will resurface Marsh Road from M-43 (West Grand River Avenue) to Tihart Road in Meridian Township. This all-season route provides access to M-43 and the I-69 Business Loop. The $635,000 project will receive $375,000 in state TEDF Category F funding.
Ionia County The Ionia County Road Commission will reconstruct Cleveland Street from East Riverside Drive to the Cleveland Street bridge over the Grand River and make intersection improvements. This existing all-season route in Ionia Township bypasses the city of Ionia and provides access to M-21 and M-66. The $450,000 project will receive $360,000 in state TEDF Category F funding.
Muskegon County The city of Muskegon Heights will reconstruct Getty Street from Broadway Avenue to Sherman Boulevard. This major north-south commercial route connects to the US-31 Business Route and other area all-season roads. The $464,000 project will receive $371,200 in state TEDF Category F funding.
Otsego County The Otsego County Road Commission will reconstruct and widen 1.8 miles of Milbocker Road from 400 feet east of South Townline Road to 400 feet west of Dickerson Road. This will complete an all-season truck bypass route in the southwest part of Gaylord with access to Gaylord Regional Airport. The $1,204,911 project will receive $375,000 in state TEDF Category F funding.
Ottawa County The Ottawa County Road Commission will reconstruct and make drainage improvements to Jackson Street from 16th Avenue to the eastbound I-96 on ramp. This will provide all-season access to commercial and industrial areas of Wright Township with access to eastbound I-96. The $260,000 project will receive $200,000 in state TEDF Category F funding.
Washtenaw County The Washtenaw County Road Commission and the city of Ann Arbor will resurface Ann Arbor/Saline Road from 345 feet north of Oak Valley Drive to Eisenhower Parkway. This important commercial corridor in Ann Arbor and Pittsfield Township provides direct access to I-94. The $674,600 project will receive $372,960 in state TEDF Category F funding.
