Fast Facts:
- The 2012 Metro Region road and bridge program is roughly $95 million less than 2011's program.
- The Metro Region maintains 33 percent of bridges and 46 percent of pavement under state jurisdiction.
- In 2012, 87 miles of pavement and 67 bridges will be upgraded in Metro Region.
February 13, 2012 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) today announced that approximately $179 million in contracts will be awarded in 2012 to improve 87 miles of pavement and repair 67 bridges in the Metro Region. The Metro Region serves four counties - Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair and Wayne - which account for about 40 percent of all traffic in Michigan.
The Metro Region 2012 program will provide approximately $124 million for pavement repair and roughly $55 million to upgrade bridges to good condition.
"Infrastructure improvements stimulate economic growth and aid commerce," said Metro Region Engineer Tony Kratofil. "Our program reflects the use of proven asset management strategies to ensure we continue to provide the greatest return on our limited funding."
In addition to new projects announced for the 2012 program, several carry-over projects from 2011 will be completed this year. Those include upgrades at the I-94/I-275 interchange in Wayne County, the reconstruction of I-94/I-69 in St. Clair County, and repairs to 10 overpasses on I-696 in Macomb County and six bridges along I-96 in Oakland County.
During 2012, the following high-impact projects are scheduled:
