US-41 Portage Lake Lift Bridge Rehabilitation

What Is Being Done?
 

Portage Lake Lift Bridge The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will rehabilitate and upgrade the Portage Lake Lift Bridge between Houghton and Hancock.This project will include:

  • Lift cable replacement;
  • Balance chain rehabilitation;
  • Electrical and mechanical upgrades;
  • Security system improvements;
  • Spot painting; and
  • New warning and barrier gates.
The Portage Lake Lift Bridge has a proven record of reliability. This preventive maintenance project will ensure the bridge remains in excellent operating condition.
 
How Will Traffic Be Affected?

Bridge traffic may be reduced to one lane in each direction for most of the project lifespan.

A 10-hour nighttime closure is planned for Jan. 17, 2015.

An 11.5-hour nighttime closure is planned for March 21, 2015.

Sixteen 2-hour nighttime closures are planned: January 2015 to April 2015.

Approximately 200 15- to 20-minute daytime and nighttime closures are planned: December 2014 to April 2016.
