M-50 Bridge Replacement over I-96, Kent County

Start: March      End: November

What Is Being Done?

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will replace and widen the M-50 (Alden Nash Avenue) bridge over I-96 in Lowell Township. The new structure will be widened by 33 feet for a total of 68 feet, accommodating four 12-foot lanes (two through-lanes and two left-turn lanes) and two 10-foot shoulders. A right-turn lane will be added for southbound M-50 traffic to westbound I-96. The eastbound I-96 off ramp also will be widened to two lanes, accommodating both left and right turns. The westbound I-96 off ramp will be widened to better accommodate left and right turns.

How Will Traffic Be Affected?

  • Intermittent shoulder closures and lane shifts will be needed on M-50 to allow for temporary and permanent widening.
  • M-50 will be closed during the old structure demolition and structure slide, and I-96 traffic will be diverted up and over the ramps.
  • M-50 closures will be limited to weekend closures (Friday night - Monday morning).
  • Intermittent lane shifts for temporary widening will be required on I-96.
  • I-96 will require closures during the old structure demolition and structure slide.
  • I-96 traffic will be reduced to one lane during these closures and detoured up and over the ramps.
  • I-96 traffic also will be stopped occasionally at night (limited to 15 minutes) during the setting of new beams.
Additional Information:

This project will use bridge slide technology. The new bridge will be constructed adjacent to the existing bridge and traffic will be diverted to the new bridge in its temporary location. The old structure will be demolished and the new bridge will be slid into place. Bridge slide technology greatly reduces the amount of time the bridge is out of service. M-50 will be closed and detoured for only two weekends (during demolition and during the slide), as opposed to a multiple-month closure typically associated with a traditional bridge replacement.
