Find a Mentor

Mentoring Photo

Young people of all ages need positive adult role models in their lives. The benefits of having a mentor, whether it's informally with someone you know or through a formal program, are great.

Please visit the Mentor Michigan Directory to see if there is a mentoring program in your area.

If you cannot find a program in your area, there may be an adult in your life that you can ask to be your mentor.

  • First, think about why you want a mentor. Maybe you need help with schoolwork. Maybe you're ready to think about a career, or explore college options. Maybe you just need someone to talk to, someone who will be able to give you good advice.Make some notes about what you'd like. It is easier to ask someone for help if you yourself know what you are asking for.

  • Make a list of all the people you know who might be able to be your mentor or to help you find a mentor. Be sure to consider all of your options, including family, friends, neighbors, teachers, coaches, club leaders, ministers, and others. Think about what things different people can help you with.

  • Think about how you might ask them to be your mentor. Maybe you could call them and set up a time to talk in person. Or, you may want to stop by their house or their office. Ask if it is a convenient time to talk to them for a few minutes and ask for their help.
  • Ask them to be your mentor or to help you find a mentor.
