What is the Michigan Disease Surveillance System (MDSS)?

  • The MDSS is a Web based communicable disease reporting system developed for the state of Michigan.

  • It has been developed to national data standards (Logical Data Model, Public Health Information Network, National Electronic Disease Surveillance System)

Why has the MDSS been developed?

  • To facilitate coordination among local, State and Federal Public Health Agencies
  • To provide for the secure transfer, maintenance and analysis of communicable disease surveillance information
  • To promote participation from a variety of stakeholders including public health, health care providers and medical laboratories
  • To address needs in many areas of traditional disease surveillance, emergent infectious diseases and biological terrorism
