Why it Matters: Traffic crashes continue to be the leading cause of death for children and young adults. The economic loss due to traffic crashes in Michigan is estimated at over $10 billion. When traffic crashes result in serious injuries or fatalities the long-term losses felt by families is immeasurable. In 2012, a total of 273,891 crashes were reported. That year, traffic accidents resulted in 6,612 serious injuries or fatalities.
