    Revenues By Category

    Why it Matters: In fiscal year 2012, state government revenues totaled $56.1 billion. Taxes made up approximately 44% of state government revenues, while grants, primarily from the federal government, comprised 31%. Revenues in the chart below are greater than revenue available for expenditures because of the inclusion of certain taxes and other revenues that were earned but not collected until future years.
