Tax Revenue Compared to Debt

Why it Matters: The following chart compares state government debt (including debt issued by state-created public authorities) to annual state tax revenues. The chart shows tax revenue used to be almost twice as much as the state's outstanding debt, but debt has grown while tax revenue has fallen. For fiscal year 2011, tax revenues exceeded total debt by $1.4 billion.
