    Reserves

    Why it Matters: It is considered good practice to keep at least 10% of annual operating expenditures in "savings". This allows school districts to cover unexpected expenses or drops in revenue. The following chart shows the reserves maintained by school districts.

    Note: The reserves are expressed as a percentage of unrestricted net assets available for spending in governmental funds relative to total expenditures in the governmental funds.
