| At the start of the Civil War, African American men were not allowed to serve in the Union Army. The government began recruiting black soldiers in 1863, after the Emancipation Proclamation. The First Michigan Colored Infantry Regiment began training in the fall of 1863. In 1864, the Colored Ladies Aid Society presented them with this flag. |
