| Insects play a very important part of a tree's life. Some insects can harm and even kill trees, while other insects are vital to the tree's health. The Gypsy Moth is one insect that can create stress on a tree. The larvae (caterpillars) eat the leaves of the tree, making it difficult for the tree to absorb sunlight and water and process these into food for the tree (photosynthesis). Without food, the tree gets weaker and can eventually die.
