Trees in the Environment
All trees need sunlight to help them grow and be healthy. Photosynthesis is a process in which trees absorb sunlight, water and nutrients to produce food for the tree. Some trees need more sunlight that others to grow. In Michigan, there are many kinds of trees that require full sunlight in order to live. They do not do well in shade. These include jack pine and aspen. At the same time, there are many trees that do not require as much sunlight to grow and be healthy. In fact, these trees need shade for their seeds to grow. Some of these trees are oaks and maples.
