Michigan's scenic beauty is well known, but traveling around the state can also be a culinary adventure for your taste buds. With Michigan second only to California in the diversity of agricultural crops grown in the United States, the opportunities for a taste of "Pure Michigan" abound.
September is a peak month for local produce. Farmers markets and farm stands are rich with edible treasures just waiting to be savored. To view and download the 2013 Agri-Tourism Directory, visit www.michiganfarmfun.com , with a handy “availability calendar” to discover what’s in season.
With the added bounty of fish from our pure lakes, and morel mushrooms, wild game and maple syrup streaming from abundant forests, there are an unlimited number of culinary delights that can be found in Michigan.
“There are many successful farm-related businesses in Michigan that are taking innovative and creative approaches to making a way of life through food and agriculture,” said Jamie Clover Adams, director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development. “As I travel the state, I am delighted to discover new experiences for the public that combine agriculture with tourism.”
Visit www.Michigan.org for a wide range of special events around the harvest season – from the Grand Haven Salmon Festival to Greenfield Village’s Fall Flavor Weekends. For more trips that will delight your palate, consider some destinations on the Foodie Tours listed at www.michigan.org/foodie-tours. Or travel one of the wine and beer trails that have recently been added under www.michigan.org/wine-beer-trails.
For those who love to catch and eat fish, there’s the popular “Catch and Cook” program, where you can enjoy a fishing excursion on a participating charter boat, then take your very own catch of the day to a local restaurant where it will be prepared just to your liking. Visit www.micatchandcook.com for details.
Fall is the perfect time to travel and experience the Flavors of Pure Michigan.
