Gov. Snyder makes appointments to Hispanic/Latino Commission

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointments of Kelly Shipman, of Mt. Pleasant, and Jeremiah Hernandez, of East Lansing, to the Hispanic/Latino Commission of Michigan.

The 15-member commission works to develop a unified policy and plan of action to serve the needs of Michigan's Hispanic and Latino residents.

“I am confident that Kelly and Jeremiah will serve this commission well,” Snyder said.

Shipman is a graduate teaching assistant of elementary Spanish at Central Michigan University. She was a volunteer teacher of literacy skills and basic education for elementary aged students at Colombia Sin Fronteras in Santa Marta, Colombia, and a lead teacher for kindergarten and elementary students in Seoul, South Korea and in Beijing, China. During her undergraduate studies she interned at Interactive School in Mexico City, Mexico, served as a site leader in Honduras, and interned in Casa Menuda, San Sebastian de Los Reyes, Spain. Shipman earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Michigan State University and is completing her master’s degree in Spanish at Central Michigan University.She will serve the remainder of a three-year term expiring Dec. 20, 2016, and replaces Jeorge Fierro.

Hernandez has worked in management for more than six years. He is currently a general manager for Best Buy where he helps promote corporate diversity and retention. Hernandez served in the U.S. Military from 2001-2008. He will serve the remainder of a three-year term expiring Dec. 10, 2015. He fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Melissa Fernandez.

Appointments to the Hispanic/Latino Commission of Michigan are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
