Gov. Snyder makes appointment to Western Michigan University Board of Trustees

Friday, June 14, 2014

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointment of James Bolger, of Whitehall, to the Western Michigan University Board of Trustees.

The eight-person board is the governing body of the university.

“I am confident James will do good work for the university,” Snyder said. “He has a distinguished career with the Michigan State Police and will bring a unique and needed perspective to the board.”

Bolger is retired after a 26 year career with the Michigan State Police. He served as a trooper, sergeant, first lieutenant, inspector, captain, and was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1992. As lieutenant colonel, he served as the commanding officer of the Uniform Services Bureau, providing executive direction and leadership to the field operations of the Michigan State Police.

Bolger was appointed by Gov. John Engler to oversee implementation of the Michigan State Public Safety Communications System – the 800 MHz radio system. He also spent 10 years as a faculty member at the Grand Valley State University School of Criminal Justice. Bolger earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Grand Valley State University and a master’s degree in public administration from Western Michigan University. He fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Michelle Crumm.

Bolger will serve the remainder of an eight-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2020. His appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
