Michigan's Adult Abuse and Neglect Prevention Training Program Final Report
In 2004, Michigan was awarded $1.5 million by the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to develop an abuse and neglect prevention training program (CMS Grant No. 11-P-93042/5-01). The Adult Abuse and Neglect Prevention (AANP) Training Program was designed for direct access staff to prevent, identify, and report adult abuse and neglect. An important goal of the AANP was to expand existing adult abuse and neglect prevention curricula, typically focused on detection and reporting, to emphasize prevention through staff empowerment, culture change and person-centered care. This was achieved by establishing a storng state-community-academic partnership between the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging, Michigan State University, BEAM (a subsidiary of MPRO), and the AANP Curricula and Advisory Committees.
As a result of the three-year project, four unique training curricula were developed: eight-hour and four-hour modules; a module for supervisors, and 12 one-hour facilitated instructional modules. In addition, 55 specialized trainers and nearly 8,000 direct access staff were trained throughout Michigan.
A formal evaluation was conducted and results indicated clear and measureable improvements in direct access staff ability to identify, report and prevent adult abuse and neglect. The full final report is included below:
