Appointed by Governor Rick Snyder in June 2011, Kari Sederburg serves as the chief advocate for Michigan's 1.8 million older adults in her position as Director of the Office of Services to the Aging. In this role, Sederburg advises the Executive and Legislative branches of government on shaping policies aimed at helping older people remain in their communities with the supports and services they need to live life fully. Under Sederburg's direction, the agency administers $93 million in federal and state funding for aging programs.
Ms. Sederburg is a long-time advocate, having served as Director of Public Policy for the Michigan Nonprofit Association prior to her appointment. While at that association, she led statewide advocacy efforts on behalf of the nonprofit sector. As well, she has served as Vice President for Marketing and Communications at the Gerontology Network in Grand Rapids, MI, overseeing all communications efforts including public relations, community relations, and advocacy.
As a Senior Account Executive at The Rossman Group, she consulted with numerous nonprofit and public sector clients on issues management, media relations, and advocacy strategies. And as Program Officer for Detroit Local Initiatives Support Corporation, she was involved in community initiatives and policy issues around land use, including vacant and abandoned property.
Sederburg is passionate about volunteering and has observed, first hand, the long term care needs of older people in her volunteer work at several nursing homes. Currently, she is a member of the Older Adult Volunteer Advisory Council, the PR Professional Advisory Committee at Ferris State University, and an active volunteer for Kali's Cure for Paralysis Foundation.
Sederburg earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business/Public Relations from Ferris State University, and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Ohio University. A self-described "people person," she enjoys great food, biking, and spending time with family. Kari and her obese cat, Riley, are Lansing residents.
