The mission of the Student Financial Services Bureau is to excel in assisting citizens to pursue postsecondary education by providing equality of access to student financial resources and information. The
Student Financial Services Bureau provides the following services:
- Administers almost $200 million for state-funded grant, scholarship, and work-study programs
annually (Office
of Scholarships and Grants (OSG)).
- Provides students with funds from federal scholarship programs (OSG).
- Federally designated guarantor for the state of Michigan, providing guarantees (lender assurance against default) for student and parent loans for Michigan residents and students attending Michigan postsecondary educational institutions.
- Provides general financial aid information to the public.
- Works with college/university financial aid administrators and high school counselors to provide technical assistance and information.
- Provides alternative, private loans for postsecondary education (MI-LOAN
Program).
- Provides student loan secondary market services.
- Coordinates bond issues which provide funding for student loans.
- Provides the Michigan Education Trust (MET) prepaid tuition savings program and is the state administrator for the Michigan Education Savings Program (MESP) managed by TIAA-CREF.
