The mission of the Student Financial Services Bureau is to excel in assisting citizens to pursue postsecondary education by providing equality of access to student financial resources and information. The
Student Financial Services Bureau provides the following services:
- Administers state funded scholarship and grant programs (Office
of Scholarships and Grants (OSG)).
- Provides students with funds from federal scholarship programs (OSG).
- Federally designated guarantor for the state of Michigan, providing guarantees (lender assurance against default) for student and parent loans for Michigan residents and students attending Michigan postsecondary educational institutions.
The guarantee function ended for new loans disbursed on or after July 1, 2010,
due to federal legislation, however, the Michigan Guaranty Agency (MGA) has $4
billion in outstanding loans that must be monitored, claims processed, or
default payments collected.
- Provides general financial aid information to the public.
- Works with college/university financial aid administrators and high school counselors to provide technical assistance and information.
- Provides the Michigan Education Trust (MET) prepaid tuition savings program and is the state administrator for the Michigan Education Savings Program (MESP) managed by TIAA-CREF.
