Teachers serving in low-income or subject matter shortage areas, may be able to cancel or defer student loans.

There is a federal Web site that provides detailed information on the forgiveness requirements.
How do I apply?
For Perkins loans, you must contact the college that holds your loan.
For Stafford loans, you must teach full-time for five consecutive years before applying. You can find the application on the above federal site. The application must be sent to your lender.
Where do I look to see if the secondary school where I am teaching qualifies?
The Office of Scholarships and Grants maintains the Michigan school information and posts it on the federal Directory know as the Teacher Cancellation Loan Income Directory.
