March 18, 2009
The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) today designated Michigan 2-1-1 as the statewide 2-1-1 coordinating agency from April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010.
The MPSC also grants 2-1-1 Michigan the right to continue to serve as the statewide 2-1-1 coordinating agency for two one-year renewal periods, for a total of three years, subject to review and approval by the Commission.
The abbreviated dialing number 2-1-1 has been assigned by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to enable callers to reach community resource and referral answering points.
Michigan 2-1-1 on Jan. 29 provided the MPSC with a progress report outlining its current progress, 2-1-1 availability in Michigan, and funding information.
In today's order, the MPSC notes that only two counties - Lenawee and St. Joseph - received the 2-1-1 abbreviated dialing designation during 2008, even though it was expected that up to 10 additional counties would receive the designation during 2008.
Michigan 2-1-1 was also directed by the MPSC today to file by Feb. 1, 2010 current information on funding, advances made in 2-1-1 availability in Michigan, and any changes from its original application.
The MPSC is an agency within the Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth.
