MPSC Approves $8.5 Million in Michigan Efficiency Grants

Contact:  Judy Palnau (517) 241-3323

September 15, 2009

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) today issued an order approving $8.5 million in Michigan energy efficiency grants for all customer classes to three organizations for the fiscal year beginning October 1.

"My fellow Commissioners and I are extremely pleased to announce these grants," said MPSC Chairman Orjiakor Isiogu.  "The grants awarded today will provide local governments with the opportunity to offset traditional fossil fuel use with renewable energy system generation and savings realized through energy efficiency measures."

The Commission on April 1 issued a request for proposals for Michigan energy efficiency grants for all customer classes.  Based on its review, the MPSC awarded the following grants:

  • Clean Energy Coalition - $4,400,000 to establish a Clean Energy Program at each of the Cities of Promise (Benton Harbor, Detroit, Flint, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Muskegon Heights, Pontiac, and Saginaw) that will facilitate ongoing energy efficiency and renewable energy installations and programs.

  • Michigan Suburbs Alliance - $3 million to install and implement renewable energy and energy efficiency applications for local governments throughout southeast Michigan, and to establish the Southeast Michigan Regional Energy Office that will provide education, technical support, and continued installation and implementation of these technologies for local governments throughout southeast Michigan.

  • Northwest Michigan Council of Governments - $1,100,000 to implement renewable energy and energy efficiency applications at local government facilities within its 10 member counties including Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Manistee, Missaukee, and Wexford.

The grants are part of the Low‑Income and Energy Efficiency Fund, which provides energy bill assistance for low‑income customers and promotes the efficient use of energy by all customer classes.

The MPSC is an agency within the Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth.
