Geothermal

All are welcome to join the MREP Geothermal Committee. The purpose of the committee is to collaborate, educate, promote and make recommendations that will increase the use of renewable energy and "the potential for reduced pollution" (Section 10r(6) of 2000 Public Act 141).

Geothermal Technology

Geothermal energy is literally heat derived from the earth. This heat has the potential to generate electricity through either dry or flash steam or binary cycle systems.

While geothermal energy production is not currently thought to be economically feasible in Michigan, the Earth's heat may be an important component to energy optimization.

The most popular use of geothermal in Michigan is for heating and cooling systems. Geothermal pumps are also commonly used to heat water. Use of geothermal pumps, powered by electricity, to heat and cool eliminates the use of the original fuel (usually natural gas or propone) and uses less electricity than a traditional electric furnace and air conditioner would. 1
