MPSC Designates UPCAP Services, Inc. as the Upper Peninsula’s 2-1-1Community Resource Information and Referral Answering Point
The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) today designated UPCAP Services, Inc. as the 2-1-1 community resource information and referral answering point for the 15 counties that comprise Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
As required by Section 214 of the Michigan Telecommunications Act (MTA), the MPSC received as part of UPCAP Services’ application written endorsements of the Michigan Alliance of Information and Referral Systems and from each county’s state-endorsed multipurpose collaborative body.
Amendments to the MTA in July 2000, granted the MPSC authority to assign the abbreviated dialing number2-1-1to community resource and referral answering points for various geographic areas withinMichigan.
The Commission concluded that its approval is provisional, in part, due to the Federal Communications Commission’s ability to recall the2-1-1number in 2005.
Today’s order requires all providers of basic local exchange service within the Upper Peninsula’s 93 exchanges to take the necessary steps to allow their customers to access UPCAP Services through the use of the 2-1-1 telephone number.
The MPSC is an agency within the Department of Labor & Economic Growth.
