The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) today issued an order designating MISS DIG as the state's sole 8-1-1 designee for the state of Michigan. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires that carriers implement the 8-1-1 service nationwide by April 13, 2007 .

MISS DIG has been the sole one-call notification system in Michigan, giving citizens and excavators contact with over 800 participating companies to ensure the safety of underground utilities.

In naming MISS DIG as the 8-1-1 designee, the MPSC noted that MISS DIG has been in place over 30 years and appears capable of continuing to serve the needs of those who would protect buried utilities.

In 2002, the Pipeline Safety Act became law, calling for the use of a nationwide, three-digit, toll-free number system to be used by state one-call notification systems. In 2005, the FCC established 8-1-1 as the three-digit number to be used as the contact number for state one-call notification systems. It directed states to address the technical and operational issues associated with the implementation of 8-1-1.
