The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) today announced it has issued a new Consumer Alert entitled "Utility Bills and Your Credit Report."
The consumer alert explains that Michigan utilities may be reporting customers' payment histories to credit reporting agencies, a practice that is federally regulated. Michigan utilities have different practices on how often and how much information they provide to credit reporting agencies. Recently some Michigan utilities have changed the way they report customer payment histories.
"It is important that customers understand that their utility credit history becomes a part of their entire credit history," said MPSC Commissioner Monica Martinez. "The new consumer alert explains how people can avoid negatively affecting their credit rating. We encourage people who foresee problems paying their utility bills to contact their utility and get on an available payment plan. Customers who make minimum payments required under the plan should be considered in good payment standing."
The consumer alert also explains how to get a free credit report and outlines the steps to take to resolve credit reporting disputes. It also provides information and resources available to help maintain good utility credit.
The consumer alert is available on the MPSC's Web site: michigan.gov/mpscalerts and clicking on the telephone, natural gas, or electric links.
It is also available by calling the MPSC toll-free at 1-800-292-9555.
The MPSC is an agency within the Department of Labor & Economic Growth.
