The Michigan Public Service Commission today designated United Way for Southeastern Michigan 2-1-1 as the 2-1-1 answering point for Washtenaw and Monroe counties. UWSEM has previously been designated the community resource information and referral answering point for Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.
The abbreviated dialing number 2-1-1 has been assigned by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to enable callers to reach community resource and referral answering points.
The United Way Regional Call Center (UWRCC) had previously been designated as the 2-1-1 answering point for exchanges in Washtenaw and Monroe counties.
Today's order transfers the following rate centers to UWSEM: Gregory, Chelsea, Manchester, Tipton, Clinton, Saline, Milan, Ann Arbor, Whitmore Lake, Dexter, Ypsilanti, Willis, Britton, Dundee, Petersburg, Lambertville, North Sylvania, Lost Peninsula, Temperance, Erie, Ida, Monroe, Newport, Carleton, and Maybee.
UWSEM will provide operation of the 2-1-1 telephone number 24 hours per day, seven days per week. The Commission concluded that its approval is provisional, in part, due to the FCC's ability to recall the 2-1-1 number.
The MPSC is an agency within the Department of Labor & Economic Growth.
