MPSC Requires Electric Utilities to File Assessments of Their Ability to Meet Peak Summer Demand

Contact:  Judy Palnau (517) 241-3323

January 11, 2010

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) today directed all regulated electric utilities and alternative electric suppliers to file assessments of their abilities to meet their customers' expected electric requirements in 2010 by March 31.

In addition, the MPSC is soliciting comments from the Midwest Independent Transmission Operator (MISO), American Transmission Company, LLC, Michigan Electric Transmission Company and International Transmission Company on the issues they believe to be relevant on this matter.

"Today's order makes sure utilities are taking steps now to ensure that they are able to meet the expected peak summertime electric demand, when high temperatures strain electric systems," said MPSC Chairman Orjiakor Isiogu.

Persons wishing to comment on the filed assessments have until April 21 to do so.  Comments referencing Case No. U-16160 may be e-mailed to mpscedockets@michigan.gov.    All information submitted to the Commission in this matter will become public information, available on the Commission's Web site, and subject to disclosure.

The MPSC is an agency within the Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth.
