November 7, 2002
The Michigan Public Service Commission today approved a settlement agreement and authorized the Michigan Movers and Warehousemen's Association to increase its rates by 3%. The Commission approved the rate increase to allow the 154 member-carriers to cover their increased labor and non-labor expenses. The increase does not include revenue enhancements for the member-carriers. The rate increase will apply to shipments of household goods outside the Detroit commercial zone. The MMWA filed an application on behalf of its 154 member-carriers requesting a general rate increase of 5% on September 6, 2002.
Today's order follows a Commission order issued on October 3, 2002, in which the Commission issued a notice of hearing to investigate whether the proposed rate increase would result in just and reasonable rates. Following a hearing, MPSC staff and the MMWA negotiated the settlement agreement.
The Michigan Movers and Warehousemen's Association represents 154 member-carriers in Michigan, who ship household goods outside the Detroit commercial zone.
